"I bought my first property at Manvel in 1991, and I bought some sale barn calves to put on it," Markham explains, "then I just kept buying property that bordered mine and buying more cows." 2014 Member and Breeder of the Year

IRBBA members selected Mr. Marcos Borges of Wharton, Texas as the honored recipient of the "Member of the Year" and "Breeder of the Year" awards at the 2014 IRBBA Annual Meeting in College Station. Established in 2013, these distinctions recognize one member and one breeder who have contributed significantly to the Red Brangus breed and to the International Red Brangus Breeders Association. The honorees have been examples to others through their programs and inspired others through their contributions.

Member of the Year

Marcos has served on the IRBBA Board of Directors since 1997 and has served as President of the association since 2006. His dedication to the association is proven by his recognition as the "Member of the Year." As Director of OB Ranch and owner of MBJ Ranch, Marcos and his family have dedicated their lives to the development and promotion of Red Brangus across the world. "Before our IRBBA Annual Meeting this year, I was commenting to my wife Adriane Borges and Fernanda Linares of OB Ranch about how important and beautiful the IRBBA awards are," Marcos said. "The Red Brangus breed is growing rapidly in many countries around the world, and the IRBBA today is a well-known and respected association across the world."

image001_sm

Breeder of the Year

Marcos represents OB Ranch as Director and owns MBJ Ranch. His contributions to the Red Brangus breed and the cattle industry run generations deep. He is a descendent of the Machado Borges and Lamartine Mendes families, both of which have been integral to the Zebu breeds in Brazil for decades. Having lived in the United States for 20 years, Marcos has worked diligently to disseminate the Nelore breed and its composites throughout the Americas including Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Colombia. "The Borges and Mendes families are fifth generation breeders of registered and commercial cattle and I am honored to continue in the footsteps of my ancestors and to receive such a commendation," Marcos said. "I am sure that my late father and grandfathers are happy to see that we are following their example of integrity, hard work and passion for the genetic improvement of cattle." OB Ranch Texas Connection was started by Uberaba visionaries Ovidio and Paulo Brito. For the past 20 years in the United States, it has helped advocate for and demonstrate the great potential of the Red Brangus and Nelore breeds, allowing them to rank as comparable to European breeds. In fact, Marcos has participated in research studies with Texas A&M University to prove the carcass quality of some Red Brangus and Nelore bloodlines is actually superior to some Angus cattle. Marcos works hard to promote the Red Brangus breed and IRBBA across the nation and world, serving as an advocate for the heritage represented by the breed. "I know that there are many of our breeders and members that deserve such recognition, but my family and I are very happy to receive this honor," Marcos said. "I would like to thank each of our members that voted for us. I will always work hard to merit this important privilege and represent IRBBA with respect and integrity."

Red Brangus junior makes history at 2014 Fort Worth Junior Brangus Show

For the first time in Fort Worth Junior Heifer Show history, a Red Brangus female took home one of the two top honors in the Junior Brangus Show. TRIO's MLS Zamy 175Z2, exhibited by Audrey Acord, an eighth grader from Madisonville, was named Reserve Grand Champion Brangus female in a show where both Red and Black Brangus compete against each other.

"It's special," said Damon Acord, Audrey's father and Red Brangus breeder who is part of TRIO Cattle & Genetics. "I don't know how to explain it."

The heifer, dubbed "Fat Amy," is out of a Wild Fire 175W cow and Lazy 3 Statesman 100S bull. Austin Acord exhibited her dam at the Fort Worth Stock Show in 2011, where she won her division.

"Our goal starting out was to try and get a Red to compete with the Blacks," Damon said. "I still don't know this is real and hope this encourages heifer sales."

The Acords encourage all Red Brangus breeders and junior exhibitors to seize the opportunity to show in Fort Worth, despite the integration between both Brangus breeds.

"Don't be scared," Damon said. "If you've got good cattle, you've got good cattle. You've got to go in head on."

Don Jobes Presented Lifetime Achievement Award

On Saturday, April 27, the International Red Brangus Breeders honored Don Jobes of J7 Ranch with the IRBBA Lifetime Achievement Award. He is the second recipient of this award in IRBBA history.

Jobes worked as Assistant General Manager of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for 31 years until his retirement in 1998.

He began the J7 brand and started ranching in 1955. In 2004, Jobes added Red Brangus genetics to his cattle herd and has produced both show and commercial Red Brangus cattle ever since. His ranch is located five miles south of East Bernard, TX.

The IRBBA Board of Directors and members feel that Mr. Jobes is strongly deserving of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
