A New Perspective on Proven Genetics

TRIO Cattle & Genetics is the partnership of three groups of cattlemen and friends dedicated to the breeding and promotion of superior cattle.

They are comprised of:

Their relationship began with an introduction in 2004 and a common appreciation of a female known as “Daphne”. This female was named the 2004 and 2005 National Grand Champion American Red Brangus Female. Building upon the synergies in herdsmanship, marketing and breeding they were developing, TRIO was established in 2007 to further their program and ideas.

The focus of the TRIO genetic development program is on the Red Brangus breed. Allen states, “Our goal is simple, to develop cattle that are right for the beef industry today and tomorrow. The challenge is more complex. We believe that EPDs are here to stay and are a valuable tool to combine with visual selection and appraisal. We strive to blend leading genotypes for performance and carcass data with the structurally correct, heavily muscled, high capacity, well balanced phenotypes that will appeal to cattlemen of all segments of the industry.” TRIO’s approach is to utilize the proven, superior Red Brangus lineages while providing a new perspective from the infusion of Red Genetics from superior Black Brangus, Brahman and Red Angus bloodlines.

As evidence of this, TRIO has selected red females with black lineages to blend with the established red pedigrees in their herd. To keep their gene pool fresh and growing, they breed for unique first generation pedigrees that they believe will produce the desired phenotypes. In an attempt to develop new bloodlines, Damon has incorporated the Broken A Ranch Red Angus herd into the program by breeding with top Red Brahman bulls to produce the half blood sires and females needed for crossing with their proven quarter blood stock.

TRIO has recognized the global opportunities in the beef industry and especially for the Brangus breed. The desired economic qualities and attributes are essentially the same says Cheramie, “Cattle must be efficient, bottom line producers of a consistent, high quality product from the pasture to the dinner plate.” Two TRIO sires are currently establishing themselves on the international scene, Lazy 3 Statesman 100S and Thorpe of Brinks 406R. TRIO is proud of their partnership with Telepara Hills Ltd. in Statesman, the 2007 International Grand Champion Red Brangus Bull. Both entities are excited about the impact this sire will have on the breed around the globe. In addition, TRIO and Telpara are cooperating on an embryo transfer program, where by Telepara is expanding their genetic base with U.S. genetics from donors housed at TRIO. A third new addition to their genetic battery is SF Celebration 75R. When considering where they want their program to be several generations into the future, the partners consider Celebration a bull to advance our the next generations with his extra depth, fleshing ability, foot, bone, soundness and over all design. The fact that Celebration was the 2007-2008 IBBA Red Brangus Show Bull of the Year is an added bonus. During his show career he was awarded Grand Champion Bull honors at the International Red Brangus Shows of the Houston Livestock Show and San Antonio Livestock Shows.

TRIO believes that providing superior genetics to our customers is not enough. Damon says that customer service is a vital component of our success. “Whether you are a purebred cattlemen, commercial cattleman or junior exhibitor, we strive to provide you with superb genetics, management and mating support. Our primary objective is satisfying you, our customer” he states.

A special interest for TRIO is junior cattle exhibitors. Damon and Jill are career educators and Austin, Allie and Audrey are fierce competitors in the national and state junior shows. Producing high quality show heifers that can help teach young people about the cattle industry is an important mission for the group.

TRIO knows that to make a difference, one must be out and involved. Damon is an advisor to the International Junior Brangus Breeder’s Association; Allen sits on the Board of Directors of the International Red Brangus Breeders Association and the IBBA Show Committee, while Cheramie serves on the IBBA International Marketing Committee. In these various capacities, TRIO is able to participate in the development of ideas that are shaping many facets of the future of the breed in the United States.

Damon and Jill are the backbone of the operation with all of the cattle being run at their Broken A Ranch in Madisonville. Madisonville, is located half way between Dallas and Houston, in Central East Texas. Damon was raised in the dairy business and brings a keen sense for developing females with longevity and maternal ability. Cheramie is a cattlewoman to her core. She is a nationally recognized and sought after judge. Her professional background ranges from having served as the agriculture liaison for a U.S. Congressman to a member of the staff at Camp Cooley Ranch. She is now a private herd consultant, sales manager and photographer. Allen and Scott are Dallas based businessmen with careers in financial services, importing and restaurants. Allen and Cheramie were team mates on the livestock judging at Texas A&M University.

TRIO welcomes the opportunity to meet breeders and exchange ideas with cattlemen and women from around the globe. The partners recognize that every market and environment calls for a range of attributes in cattle and the business of producing them. They seek to learn what traits and practices they can incorporate and likewise share, all in an effort to provide a unique perspective on proven genetics.
