Burning B Ranch

The Burning B Ranch was founded in 2004 when Mike and Vetta Blackburn bought their first piece of ranch land in Weimar, Texas.  For the first few years they used the ranch as a weekend getaway and experimented with different cattle breeds including Black Brangus, Santa Gertrudis and Red Brangus. 

In 2006, Mike retired from his executive position with a major oil company after a 30 year career, 18 geographic moves, and two overseas assignments. Their last of four children was headed off to school at Texas A&M and it was time to start a new chapter in their lives.  At this point Mike and Vetta began to get serious about the cattle business and focused on Red Brangus as their breed of choice.  They purchased 10 heifers from Cox Excalibur in the summer of 2006, with many of these animals continuing as the foundation of our breeding program.
 
In 2008 and 2009, Mike and Vetta purchased additional adjoining ranch property to accommodate the growing herd and moved to dispose of all remaining breeds except Red Brangus.  Ensuing purchases of Red Brangus cattle from Buffaloe Cattle Company, El Rancho de Trabajo, MBJ Ranch, Triple JR, and Sureway have built the outstanding herd to 60 breeding dams.  Burning B Ranch continues to be a production partner of Cox Excalibur.   
 
The Burning B Ranch has used a series of outstanding herd sires originating from the Cox Excalibur genetic pool:  CX Legend 46P2, CX Chiefman 46P, CX Future Promise 4R and Promise Keeper 84R.

The Burning B Ranch has historically consigned animals in The Event - Brenham, the Divas in Red Sale - College Station, Cox Excalibur sale in October, and on occasion, the Genetic Edge sale at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Their cattle are also marketed at private treaty.  Semen from herd sire CX Legend 46P2 and embryos from featured cows are for sale. 

The Burning B serves as the headquarters of the Blackburn’s cattle operation as well as the meeting location for their large family of four children, their spouses and four grandchildren.
